Viruses

New viruses come out every day.  Some are cute little nondestructive programs, while others can really make it a bad day for your computer.  Most viruses these days are spread through email, infected websites and internet downloads.  A virus protection program can stop these viruses from affecting your computer, but only if you keep it updated.

If you should happen to catch a virus in your computer, D-C Enterprises specializes in the removal of these problems.  Be aware that many computer consultants want you to reformat your hard drive to eliminate the problem.  This is not necessary, and doing so will cause you to lose data and photos that are important to you.  Please contact us before you format the hard drive, to see if there isn't something else that can be done.

Suggestions for Preventing A Virus Attack

1.  To protect your expensive hardware and irreplaceable data, be sure that your virus protection program is up to date.  Download the current update for your program at least a couple of times a month.  Better yet, set the program to do it automatically whenever there is a new update.  That way, when a virus comes to your computer, the software will keep it from harming your computer.

2.  If you receive an email from someone you do not know, and it has an attached file, delete that email without clicking on the attachment.  Opening a file attachment is one of the most common methods of virus infection.  If you receive an attachment from someone you DO know, contact them before clicking on that attachment to see if they had intended to send it to you, and ask them what the attached file is.

3.  If your computer should happen to become infected with a computer virus, contact us.  We can point you to a website that will help you deal with the destruction on your own, or (better yet) we will come in person and eliminate the problem for you.  Be aware that you do NOT need to reformat your hard drive when your computer has been infected with a virus, as some people suggest.  Write down our phone number now, in case a virus or other problem should incapacitate your computer (559-868-3486)

4.  Update your internet software, especially if you use Internet Explorer, Outlook or Outlook Express.  These programs have known security issues that are used by virus programmers.  Other internet browsers and email programs are safer to use, but they do not eliminate the risk of being infected.
