Suggestions for Improving Computer Speed

Warning:    Be aware that if you are not familiar with how to accomplish some of the following suggestions, you should do some reading or have someone experienced show you how to do them.  You can cause problems with your computer if you make these changes without being able to restore the defaults.

1.  Watch the programs that start when your computer starts up.  The more programs you have running, the slower your computer will run.  In Windows 95, 98, ME, and XP most of these can be seen as small icons at the lower right corner of your computer screen, next to the clock.  If you don't need a particular program to start every time you use your computer, you can stop these programs from loading by removing the icon from the Start Up folder.

2.  Most programs no longer need to have drivers loaded outside of Windows.  These drivers are loaded by files that are checked prior to Windows starting up.  If you have Windows 98 or higher, you can "turn off" the config.sys and autoexec.bat files by using the System Configuration  Utility.  (Start Menu -- Run -- type in MSCONFIG and click OK)

3.  Delete Temporary Files.  While Windows is running, it uses a folder for dozens of files that store short term information.  When Windows is shut down properly, these files are supposed to be deleted.  But when Windows locks up or otherwise doesn't shut down properly, these files are left there, which can slow down your computer system.  To eliminate these files, run the Disk Cleanup program.  (Start Menu -- Programs -- Accessories -- System Tools -- Disk Cleanup)

4.  A higher video graphics color setting will actually increase video performance.  If the colors are set too low, Windows has to calculate each time something new comes onto the screen, to decide which colors to use and which ones to modify.  Having a higher setting eliminates these calculations.  Run the Display Properties program to make this change.  Note:  Not all graphics cards, drivers and monitors will support all the color depth choices.  (Start Menu -- Settings -- Control Panel -- Double click on Display Properties icon -- Select the Settings tab)

5.  Add more memory.

6.  Hire D-C Enterprises to come to your home or place of business and optimize your system for you.
